The most effective learners are not the ones who never make mistakes. They are the ones who can see their mistakes clearly and correct them efficiently. Self-assessment — the ability to review and critique your own work — is one of the most powerful academic skills you can develop, and it is rarely explicitly taught.

Why self-feedback is difficult

The challenge of reviewing your own work is largely a proximity problem. You know what you meant to say so clearly that it is difficult to see whether you actually said it. You cannot read your own essay with fresh eyes, because your eyes are not fresh — they carry all the context, intention and assumed knowledge that went into writing it.

The solution is to create distance. Leave a meaningful gap between finishing a draft and reviewing it — at minimum 24 hours, ideally longer. When you return to it, you will read closer to what is actually on the page, rather than what you intended to put there.

Read your work aloud

Reading your essay aloud is one of the most effective self-editing techniques available, and the most underused. Your ear catches what your eye misses: awkward constructions, missing transitions, sentences that are syntactically correct but tonally wrong, paragraphs that lose their thread. If you stumble while reading aloud, the reader will stumble too. Fix it.

Use a review checklist

Before submitting any piece of work, review it against a checklist: Does every paragraph have a clear topic sentence? Does every claim have supporting evidence? Is every transition explicit? Have I addressed the question as asked, not as I wished it had been asked? Does my conclusion go beyond summary? Is every citation formatted correctly?

A checklist removes the dependence on intuition and replaces it with a systematic process. Consistent process produces consistent improvement.
